School Closing For Hurricanes (or Other Weather Related Closings)

hurricaneThe Catholic Schools will follow the lead of Escambia County School District announcements regarding school closings during the hurricane season or for other weather related school closings. Announcements will be made on the radio (WYCT 98.7 FM, WCOA 1370 AM and JET 100.7 FM) and TV (WEAR Channel 3).

Although we close with Escambia County Schools, we re-open earlier because our schools are not used as shelters. Please stay tuned for news concerning Sacred Heart Cathedral School and our re-opening date (not other area Catholic schools as they may sustain damage that prevents them from re-opening when we do).

Listen for announcements that pertain to Escambia County, FLORIDA not Escambia County, ALABAMA – the towns of Brewton, Atmore and Flomaton.

If your house is significantly damaged or destroyed during a storm, if you evacuate and cannot return in a timely manner, etc. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL THE SCHOOL and leave a message. We want to know that all of our families are safe.

School Messenger:   Parents and staff can expect to receive an automated phone message or text containing vital school closing and re-opening information.

Facebook:   School closing and re-opening information will be posted

Escambia County Public Service Announcement:   Be prepared. As this hurricane season approaches, Escambia County officials are reminding citizens that “the first 72 is on you,” a catchy way of saying that citizens should be equipped to provide for themselves, their families and their pets for at least three days following a major hurricane. State and federal help will not be on the scene and local resources will be spread thin.

News & Notes

SnowIconWe are off to a wonderful start to the new school year. Thank you for the wonderful feedback you have given me about the faculty, staff and beginning of our year. I feel so blessed to be here at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and I welcome the addition of Mr. David Kimbell as our part-time assistant principal and middle school teacher. The sense of family that permeates the school community is a testament to our Catholic identity. The students clearly live their faith. I have seen their faith in action from older children helping younger students during the first week of school to their prayerful participation at Morning Prayer and at our liturgies. Our Eucharistic procession was especially moving as our student body prayerfully followed Father James  in procession around the school.  Our children are our greatest blessing.

We were busy this summer making improvements to our building.  Our gym underwent its final renovation and there was new carpet installed in kindergarten and two new air-conditioners installed. Thanks to Mr. Kimbell’s suggestions, we are beautifying our school grounds and you will notice a few more changes in the near future.

While all of us have had professional development in using Haiku, we are still learning how to perfect our skills using this media for communication.  Please be patient as we learn from one another how to best navigate the network and provide you with the best information.

I thank you for your continued support of our school and the many programs we will offer to you and your family. Together, we are truly “educating hearts and minds” for God.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 23rd.  That is the night of our second annual Mixer.  It is an adult only event which gives new and returning parents a time to socialize.  We had a great time last year and am looking forward to another great evening.  Thank you to PTO for sponsoring this event.
